Simook Oh’s series of work aims to dematerialize art beyond an object to create an open space for thoughts. “My art is a work for your thoughts, unbounded by mine.” Aesthetically grounded and delicate, each work explores the limitless possibilities of the human mind. Oh manipulates the elements of art to play with the viewers’ perception— creating an immersive and personal experience. In particular, his practice explores the unique characteristics of materials to find the ideal ones to best convey his artistic language. With representation and perception as parameters, Oh focuses on creating a visually minimal yet unconstrained outcome, systematically layering chosen materials over time. The artist’s commitment to instigate a wordless dialogue is manifested by the dynamic perspectives viewers experience depending on movement — what you see, where you stand.

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Simook Oh has spent much of his youth in the US. Since graduating from Rhode Island School of Design in 2016, he has been living and working back home in Seoul.
